Fuel Conservation Tips

“Millions of dollars worth of gasoline is wasted every day by motorists because simple and inexpensive vehicle maintenance is neglected,” says Rich White, Executive Director of the Car Care Council. “Loose or missing gas caps, under-inflated tyres, worn spark plugs and dirty air filters all contribute to poor fuel economy.”

Follow these tips from the Car Care Council and you’ll be well on your way to considerable savings at the pump:

Vehicle Gas Caps: About 17% of all vehicles on the road have gas caps that are either damaged, loose, or are missing altogether. Before you begin to doubt the significance of the gas cap, consider this: Millions of Litres of gas vaporize every year because of this.

Under-Inflated Tyres: The Car Care Council recognizes the importance of keeping tyres properly inflated. Think of it this way: when tyres aren’t inflated correctly, it’s like driving with the parking brake engaged and can cost several kilometres per litre!

Worn Spark Plugs: A typical vehicle has either four, six, or eight spark plugs which fire as many as three million times every 1,500 kilometres. This action results in a great amount of heat plus electrical and chemical erosion. A dirty, worn spark plug causes misfiring, thus wasting fuel. For just a single misfiring spark plug, the fuel penalty is a kilometre per litre.

While each of these items seems rather small and insignificant within the scope of an entire vehicle, they are nonetheless important for proper functioning and, in terms of maintenance and replacement, are relatively simple, inexpensive ways to save gas money while prolonging the life of your vehicle.
